Instructor Training

In order to become an approved driving instructor (A.D.I.) you have to pass 3 exams:

Part 1: Theory

This is similar to the learner theory test in that it is in 2 parts.  The first part is multiple choice and the second is hazard perception.  Both parts must be passed before you can proceed to the next test.  Most of the work for part 1 will be home study, although a package is available at a minimal cost and advise on books you need to study will be given free of charge.

Part 2: Driving Ability

This must be passed within 3 attempts and is similar to the practical driving test, except a much higher standard is required.  You are only allowed 6 minor faults compared to 15 on the learner test and it last about 20 minutes longer.  The hourly rate for part 2 training is £25.00 per hour or £200.00 for 10 hours.  A complete package for parts 2 and 3 is also available (see below)

Part 3: Instructing Ability

This is a test of your ability to instruct a learner driver and is taken by a supervising examiner (SE A.D.I.).  The test is in 2 parts, the first half is training a pupil in the early stages of learning and the second half is someone nearer the test standard.  Both parts 2 and 3 must be passed in order to qualify for the A.D.I. green badge and qualification as an A.D.I.  In preparation for the test you can work as an P.D.I. (Potential Driving Instructor) this license lasts 6 months and allows you to work as an instructor during this time.

The hourly rate for part 3 training is £25.00 per hour or £200.00 for 10 hours. A complete package for part 2 and 3 training is available at £2500.00.  For this you get as much training as you need (provided the trainer is available).  Full day training is also available at £120.00 and is between 9am and 5pm with an hour for lunch.  For a full days training the pickup and drop off areas are more flexible.

In order to qualify as an A.D.I. you must be willing to commit to a considerable amount of training both with your trainer and privately on your own.  (You will be checked by the D.S.A. for criminal records which could exclude you).  All our training is done in the car unlike some college style training, where classroom training is used to substitute some of the in car training.  In car training is much better as you can't beat practical experience.
